GM & Verizon 4G
Jan 05, 2011

Check out what GM, Onstar, & Verizon have on display at the CES Show in Vegas this week.

A Buick LaCrosse connected to the Verizon Wireless 4G LTE Mobile Broadband network will show off the following:

  • Vehicle Monitoring: Cameras are proliferating in cars like airbags. And cameras mounted throughout the inside and the exterior of the Buick let the owner see what’s happening around the car from a smartphone or personal computer.

  • Impact detection: This one’s pretty cool. Those exterior cameras can record a video clip when another car hits your car. It uploads the video clip to secure cloud servers, allowing for probable identification of the offending car/driver.
  • Home monitoring control: Use the 4Home service to control your thermostat, lights and other home systems from the car or truck’s video monitor. You control those systems through presets in the car.
  • Electronic User’s Guide: Will new car owners read owners manuals, if they’re on-screen or on a smartphone, instead of in the glovebox?
  • Video chat: Uses Skype so you can talk to friends and family on the navigation screen, the sort of thing promised since before “The Jetsons.” Works only when the vehicle is in park, of course.

  • Traffic view: A voice-operated navi that relies on the traffic cameras proliferating around the nation’s highways and streets, to help you avoid traffic jams.
